Witherby, 1933, 1st Edition, slight marks front endpapers, corners worn & a little bumped, slight nick edge of board, illustrated from black-and-white photographs, V.G.  Ernest Albert Baker (1869-1941) was an author, and editor of English fiction, dictionaries and librarianship.  Amongst his publications is the standard reference work The History of the English Novel, first published in 10 volumes between 1924 and 1939.  He was a contemporary of the Abraham brothers, with whom he occasionally climbed.  He also wrote Moors, Crags and Caves of the High Peak and the Neighbourhood (1903), The Highlands with Rope and Rucksack (1923) and On Foot in the Highlands (1932).  As well as climbing, he had a particular interest in caving and wrote The Netherworld of Mendip; Explorations in the Great Caverns of Somerset, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Elsewhere (with H.E. Balch, 1907) and Caving: Episodes of Underground Exploration (1932).  The author climbed and caved widely in the Peak District, often with his regular partner J.W. Puttrell, with whom he later fell out, particularly over the controversy surrounding the first ascent of High Tor Gully.
