Autobiography of Italian Riccardo Cassin (1909-2009), one of the finest twentieth century mountaineers. His Alpine first ascents in the 1930s included the S.E. Ridge of Torre Trieste and the North Face of the Cima Ovest (1935) in the Dolomites, the North-East Face of the Piz Badile (1937) and the Walker Spur on the Grandes Jorasses (1938). He also led the team on which Bonatti made the first ascent of Gasherbrum IV (1957), led the first ascent of McKinley’s Cassin Ridge (1961), and led the 1975 Lhotse south face attempt with Messner.
