Published by Diadem Books, London & The Mountaineers, Seattle, 1987, a photo-reprint of the 1955 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine. This new edition of Kenneth Mason’s classic work, written at the very beginning of what would become known as the golden age of Himalayan mountaineering, is strengthened by over 50 additional photographs, including pictures of the main mountaineers and pioneers of the period and a selection of the important peaks climbed or attempted. The Foreword has been written by Doug Scott, veteran of 23 Himalayan expeditions. Neate notes this book as “the most authoritative one volume reference source on the historical and geographical history of the entire Himalayan range, with a remarkably comprehensive history of Himalayan exploration”. The journeys of great Himalayan explorers figure prominently and Mason covers all the classic expeditions, including the British on Everest, Americans and Italians on K2, and the disastrous German attempts on Nanga Parbat. The book ends in 1953 with the first ascents of Everest and Nanga Parbat.
