James Ramsey Ullman (1907-1971) was the official historian for the expedition and the oldest member of the team at 55.  Led by the Swiss-born explorer, veteran mountaineer and film-maker Norman G. Dyhrenfurth (1918-2017), whose father Gunter led International Himalayan expeditions in the 1930s, the successful American Mount Everest Expedition 1963 put 6 climbers on the summit in 3 parties.  Jim Whittaker, Nawang Gombu, Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad all summited via the South Col route, with Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld making the first ascent of the West Ridge and descending by the South Col, hence completing the first traverse of the mountain.
