Description

Published by The Mountaineers, Seattle, 2002, 1st North American Edition, D/w, Mint.    Andreas “Anderl” Heckmair (1906-2005) was a German climber and mountain guide who led the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in July 1938.  Heckmair will always be remembered for his leadership of the four-man party which made the successful first ascent of the Eiger North Face, the others in the party being Heinrich Harrer (who wrote the classic The White Spider about the Eiger), Fritz Kasparek and Ludwig Vorg.  This autobiography is an update of Heckmair’s earlier work, My Life as a Mountaineer, which was published in 1975, and includes his ascents in the Grandes Jorasses and other mountains across the Alps, as well as the Himalayas, the Andes, North America and his work as a guide.
