McCormick and a map, A Fine Copy.  Sir William Martin Conway (1856-1937), 1st Baron Conway of Allington, was was an English art critic, politician, cartographer and mountaineer, who made expeditions in Europe as well as in South America and Asia.  This first major climbing expedition to the Himalaya in 1892 was the prototype for most subsequent major expeditions.  In addition to exploring the Hispar, Biafo and Baltoro areas, the first ascent of Pioneer Peak (22,600 ft) was made, the highest point climbed at the time.  A classic of Himalayan literature.  This is the single volume narrative without the separately issued volume of scientific reports.  Conway was President of the Alpine Club (1902-1904) and wrote a number of mountaineering and polar books, the other most significant ones being The Alps from End to End (1895), The First Crossing of Spitsbergen (1897), The Bolivian Andes (1901), Aconcagua and Tierra del Fuego: A Book of Climbing, Travel and Exploration (1902), No Man’s Land, A History of Spitsbergen (1906) and Mountain Memories (1920).
