Description
Published by David Douglas, Edinburgh, 1902, 1st Edition, top edge gilt, cloth a little dull and slight wear at corners and edges, a few small marks on boards, overall a V.G. copy in the original cloth. J. Norman Collie (1859-1942) was an eminent scientist in his day and was Professor of Organic Chemistry at University College London. He also acquired great fame as a climber and explorer of mountains – ‘Collie is one of the best loved figures in British Mountaineering history’ (Neate). Beginning with the Cuillin peaks in Skye, where he discovered many new climbs, he climbed with notable success in the Alps, and went in 1895 with A.F. Mummery to the Himalayas, where they attempted the ascent of Nanga Parbat; during this expedition, well documented in this volume, Mummery was killed, an episode which deeply affected Collie. This book, Climbing on the Himalaya and Other Mountain Ranges, and (with Hugh E.M. Stutfield) Climbs and Exploration in the Canadian Rockies (1903), are highly regarded and famous records of his activities. He was elected president of the Alpine Club in 1920 and was an honorary member of many other climbing clubs. This great classic also includes chapters on the Canadian Rockies, Alps, Lofoten, Skye and Ireland.
