Published by Vicarious Publishing, Dublin, 2013, 1st Irish Edition, D/w, Mint. Irish climber and mountaineer Gerry Galligan had climbed extensively in Ireland, Britain, the Alps, Norway, the Rockies, the Andes and the Garhwal Himalaya before setting out, with three friends from the Irish Mountaineering Club to climb an unnamed 6,000 metre peak in the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh, subsequently named Ramabang (6,135 metres). Galligan’s first book is an expansive travel diary, which includes his attempts on further peaks after success on Ramabang and, significantly, his overland journey across Asia and Europe, including Pakistan, Iran and Turkey, back to Ireland. These travels provide an insight into the day-to-day lives of mountain peoples in a book described as “one man’s understanding of mountains, myth and mayhem”.
