Description
Published by Jonathan Cape, 1997, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine. Joe Simpson describes an expedition which attempted a hard new route on Pumori, near Everest. But he also reflects on the state of Himalayan climbing, and particularly questions the increasing commerciality on Everest attempts, as well as the changing values of those attempting the mountain. This follows an incident in 1992, when an Indian climber was left to die alone on the South Col of Everest by other climbers who were near enough to have at least comforted him in his final moments, but failed to do so. He also reflects objectively on the 1996 disaster on Everest and questions the moral climate of mountaineering in the late 1990’s. A challenging book, which was short-listed for the 1997 Boardman Tasker Award.
