Description

Published by Promontory Press, Victoria B.C., (c.1970), 1st North American Edition, slight cracking hinges, D/w (very slight nicks edges), Large Quarto, Nr. Fine.    In 1869 ten men in four boats, led by Major John Wesley Powell, swept down the raging Colorado River on the first trip through the Grand Canyon. On Aug. 30, 1869, thirteen weeks after the expedition left Green River Station in Wyoming Territory, the one-armed Major, with only two boats and six survivors, emerged from the canyon. Powell’s dramatic journal of 1869, edited and introduced by Don D. Fowler, is enhanced with a 48-page gallery of full-color photographs and an epilogue by Eliot Porter.
