Edward Whymper (1840-1911) is best known for his first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 and the subsequent tragedy where four of his party were killed on the descent, leading to much controversy at the time. Whymper made first ascents in the Mont Blanc area and the Pennine Alps, Chimborazo and the Canadian Rockies, as well as exploration in Greenland. He also wrote possibly the most famous mountaineering book in the world, the classic Scrambles Amongst The Alps In The Years 1860-69.
