John Harlin, the leader of the British-American team attempting a new direct winter route on the North Face of the Eiger, fell to his death when a rope broke. As a tribute to Harlin, the remainder of the team, which included Haston and Layton Kor, decided to continue and joined forces with a German team attempting a similar line. The summit, by the new Direct Route, was eventually reached by Haston, Jorg Lehne, Gunther Strobel, Roland Votteler and Sigi Hupfauer.
