Description
Published by Constable, London, 1998, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine. Dr Peter Steele, a friend of Shipton’s for many years and author of the well regarded Doctor on Everest about the 1971 International Everest Expedition, has here produced a biography which does justice to the enigmatic figure who is still the role model for many post-war expedition climbers. Though Shipton, and his frequent climbing companion, Bill Tilman, produced many books between them, these told of the travels, climbs and explorations, but relatively little of the person. Peter Steele has brought the self-effacing Shipton to life by talking to family and friends and through access to Shipton’s diaries and hundreds of very personal letters written over five decades, as well as his personal knowledge of one of the truly great mountain explorers of the twentieth century. He also gives, for the first time, the full controversial story behind Shipton’s shocking exclusion from the 1953 British expedition to Everest. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings. Winner of the Boardman Tasker Award for 1998.
