Published by Hayloft Publishing, Cumbria, 2013, Updated edition of the 2003 1st UK Edition, D/w, Mint. Michael Ward (1925-2005) was an English surgeon, mountaineer and expedition doctor who took part in the 1951 British Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition and the 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition on which Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay succeeded in making the first ascent of the mountain. He was also a pioneer in high altitude medicine, which he researched with Griffith Pugh on the 1960-61 Silver Hut Expedition, and went on to become an acknowledged expert in the field of High Altitude Medicine and Physiology. This book, published to great acclaim in 2003, has been updated in this new edition and is the first comprehensive monograph to tell the story of Everest as it has evolved over the centuries, with detailed appendices, maps, references and bibliography. Jan Morris, The Times correspondent with the 1953 Expedition, said of this book “I am more convinced than ever that this book is the most interesting ever written about Everest”.
