Description
Published by Kaye & Ward, London, 1979, 1st UK Edition, D/w (slightly faded spine as usual), Nr. Fine. Messner’s account of the groundbreaking first ascent of Everest without bottled oxygen by himself and Peter Habeler in May 1978. Prior to this ascent most people, including most mountaineers, doubted whether men could survive without oxygen at 29,000 feet, let alone climb Everest, with all that entails, without supplementary oxygen. Messner and Habeler were members of the 1978 Austrian Expedition which had two main objectives, namely the first Austrian ascent and the first ascent without bottled oxygen – both were achieved.
