Description
Published by National Geographic Society, Washington DC, 1997, 1st US Edition, D/w, Fine. Illustrated with detailed maps and over 130 full colour photographs, this handsome large format volume is a result of the expedition led by David Breashears with an IMAX film crew in May 1996 to film from the summit of Everest. They would become involved in one of the worst disasters ever on Everest, when eight members of two teams led by experienced mountaineers Rob Hall and Scott Fisher lost their lives in a blizzard, including the two leaders. Breashears and his team suspended their filmmaking and became part of the rescue of those still on the mountain, returning later to complete their filming. Coburn’s fine book captures the story brilliantly, but also includes fascinating information about Nepal, Buddhism, and the Sherpa culture, as well as the history of climbing on Everest.
