This superb large-format landscape volume was published to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Tenzing and Hillary’s first ascent of Everest in 1953. It chronicles Everest history through the twentieth century and is illustrated by over 400 photographs, many previously unpublished, from the Everest Collection of photographs, documents and artifacts at The Royal Geographical Society. Edited by Joanna Wright, Curator of Photography at The RGS, and Stephen Venables, who also contributes two chapters on The Long Ascent 1921-1953 and, with Reinhold Messner, The Continuing Challenge. Other contributions are The Highest Mountain in the World by John Keay, Chomolungma: Abode of the Gods by Ed Douglas, and Sherpas: Tigers of the Snow by Tashi and Judy Tenzing (Tashi is Tenzing Norgay’s grandson). Expedition members from 1921 to 1953 are profiled and ascents since 1953 are listed. A superb pictorial record and history.
