Description

Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1954, 1st UK Edition, D/w (edges worn, small pieces missing in a few places, a few tears), Book Fine but D/w G/V.G.   This large format photo album of the two 1952 Swiss Expeditions to Everest provides 144 pictures, mostly in black-and-white with a handful in colour. The introduction by Othmar Gurtner provides a potted history of climbing on the mountain, including the successful British 1953 Expedition – this success followed knowledge gained from the Swiss, who solved the problem of the Khumbu Icefall and the route to the South Col and came very close to success, with Raymond Lambert and Tenzing getting to over 28,000 feet on their first expedition in May 1952.
