The Quest for Sandy Irvine

Published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson, London, 2000, 1st UK Edition, D/w (slight marks), Nr. Fine.   The mystery of Mallory and Irvine and their disappearance on Everest along with the question of whether they reached the summit of Everest some thirty years before Hillary and Tenzing continues to interest climbers and non-climbers alike.  Much has been written about George Mallory, but far less about the story of Sandy Irvine, his partner on that fateful day in 1924.  The author Julie Summers, great-niece of Sandy Irvine, looks to correct that balance.  She has been fascinated since childhood by the story of ‘Uncle Sandy’. In May 2000, Julie made an astonishing discovery: a long forgotten and unopened trunk containing Irvine’s letters and photographs from Everest, much more revealing than the diary that was published in 1979, and providing rich source material for this biography.   Shortlisted for the Grand Prize at the Banff Mountain Book Festival.
