Fine.   Steve Roper (1941- ) and Allen Steck (1926-2023) produced this classic, and now scarce, volume of climbing literature highlighting the best and most challenging of American climbs, though they insisted it was ‘A’ list of classic climbs and not ‘THE’ list – this has not stopped it creating a fantastic ‘tick list’.  The routes were chosen following wide consultation with peers and honed down from an initial list of 120 outstanding climbs.  Roper is a noted climber and historian in the US and, along with Steck, they were the founding editors of the Sierra Club journal Ascent.  Roper was also the winner of the Sierra Club’s Francis P. Farquhar Mountaineering Award for 1983.  The book is large format and very well illustrated with black-and-white photographs throughout.
