Published by Cassell, London, 1973, 1st UK Edition, D/w (3cm tear at fore-edge of wrapper), Nr.Fine.   The Ghar Parau cave in the Kuh-e-Parau massif of Ianian Kurdistan was discovered in 1971 by the British Speleological Expedition to the Zagros Mountains, who explored an unexpected 22 pitches to a depth of 2,350 feet before their equipment ran out. A second Expedition a year later, supported by the Royal Geographical Society and the Cave Research Group, set out to explore further and to try to beat the world depth record which stood at 3,850 feet.  This is the story of the two year assault by the expedition leader.
