Published by Secker & Warburg, London, 1966, 1st Edition, D/w (some staining to bottom edge and a few nicks), Ex-library (RSM on verso title, plus a couple of date stamps inside rear board), though a library copy, overall V.G. Eric Byne (1910-1968) occupies a significant place in the history of gritstone climbing, being a driving force in the group of working class climbers known as the Sheffield Climbing Club that emerged in the depression years of the 1930s. This group climbed mainly on the Eastern Edges, putting up routes that even today are graded up to E2 5b, often with little or no gear. This well illustrated volume remains a classic account and, at the time of publication, the definitive work on the history of walking and climbing in the Peak District, covering the period from the 1890s until the mid 1960s.
