Description

Published by Hutchinson, London, 2007, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine.    Stephen Venables is a British mountaineer and author, who is best known for his 1988 new route on the Kangshung Face of Everest, completed solo and without supplementary oxygen, making him the first Briton to climb Everest without oxygen.  This well-written autobiography traces Venables’ introduction to climbing at Oxford in the 1970s, through adventures across four continents, to climax with him revisiting the achievement on Everest, described by Reinhold Messner as “the most adventurous success in Everest’s history” and by Lord Hunt, in his foreword to Everest Kangshung Face, as ranking “with the most remarkable among the ordeals from which men or women have returned alive”.  Winner of the Banff Mountain Festival Mountain Literature Prize 2007.
