John Tyndall was an eminent 19th century Irish physicist and a major figure in the Golden Age of Alpine mountaineering, being a rival of Whymper’s for the first ascent of the Matterhorn. This, his most well known book, includes his first ascent of the Weisshorn in 1861 and his attempts on the Matterhorn, which he eventually climbed in 1868, an early ascent some 3 years after Whymper, plus many others climbs. One of the cornerstones of any Alpine library.
