Description

Published by George Allen & Unwin, London, 1957, 1st UK Edition, Insc, D/w (slight nicks), V.G.    Hardie was a New Zealander who was a contemporary of, and climbed with, Edmund Hillary and Charles Evans.  In 1955, a day after Joe Brown and George Band made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga, Hardie with Tony Streather made the second ascent (Hardie was deputy leader of the expedition to Charles Evans).  After the successful climb, Hardie travelled with three Sherpa for several months in their home region. Joined by his wife and a friend from New Zealand, Joe Macdonald, he mapped the last uncharted areas of the Himalayas south of Mount Everest. This volume is the story of Hardie’s travels and time spent with the Sherpa community after the Kangchenjunga expedition.
