Published by Ernest Press, 1991, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine. Will McLewin was the first British mountaineer known to have climbed, without guides and many solo, all the peaks recognised at the time as being over 4,000 metres, though that listing has changed a number of times since. The title comes from the fact that Monte Viso in the southern Alps (itself just shy of 4,000 metres) stands prominently above other local peaks and can be seen from many of the 4,000 metre peaks on a clear day. McLewin’s narrative is not a step-by-step guidebook, rather his experiences and observations in completing the climbs, with this excellent volume being the Winner of the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature for 1992.
