Description
Published by Collins, London, 1955, 1st UK Edition, Insc, slight foxing edges, D/w (worn and nicked at edges, some tears), V.G. At first all looked good for the 1953 American K2 Expedition, the third American expedition to attempt the first ascent, but then Art Gilkey became ill high on the mountain and the team’s efforts turned to what would be an extremely challenging rescue. In appalling conditions, further disaster struck when a fall led to most of the team being pulled from the mountain, to be saved only by an almost miraculous belay by Pete Schoening, who held the weight of six men. Art Gilkey died, but somehow the rest of the team survived – an iconic and now legendary tale of human endurance and human friendship.
