Description

Published by Elek Books, London, 1955, 1st UK Edition, D/w (slight wear edges and a little dull), Nr. Fine.    Well written account of the 1954 reconnaissance expedition to Kanchenjunga, led by John Kempe and including the author, that explored 3 options and paved the way for the successful British Kanchenjunga Expedition in 1955 which made the first ascent, putting Joe Brown and George Band on the summit on 25th May, followed the next day by Norman Hardie and Tony Streather.  The first part of the book also provides a useful history of the early exploration and attempts on Kanchenjunga, starting with the Swiss in 1905, a British attempt in 1920, the Bavarian attempts in 1929 and 1931, between which Dyhrenfurth led an International Expedition in 1930.
