Description

Published by Hutchinson, London, 1961, 1st UK Edition, D/w (worn and some small tears and nicks), V.G.   A very personal account of the successful Italian Alpine Club Expedition in 1958 to Gasherbrum IV, a remote 26,000 foot peak located at the north-eastern end of the Baltoro Glacier in the Karakoram.  The expedition was led by Riccardo Cassin and saw Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri make the first ascent on 6th August 1958.  Maraini writes not only about the expedition and its members, but also provides a vivid description of the inhabitants of the area, their religions and origins, and the history of the majestic mountain ranges the expedition passes through.  Neate notes “This finely illustrated book by an Italian mountaineer-scholar is a worthy successor to De Filippi’s great work on the same region”. Illustrated with 108 photographs in colour and black-and-white by the author.
