Description
Published by John Heywood Ltd, Manchester, (1903), 1st UK Edition, pictorial boards, No D/w, Nr. Fine. Ernest Albert Baker (1869-1941) was an author, and editor of English fiction, dictionaries and librarianship. Amongst his publications is the standard reference work The History of the English Novel, first published in 10 volumes between 1924 and 1939. As well as climbing, he had a particular interest in caving and, as well as the current volume, wrote The Netherworld of Mendip; Explorations in the Great Caverns of Somerset, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Elsewhere (with H.E. Balch, 1907) and Caving: Episodes of Underground Exploration (1932). The author climbed and caved widely in the Peak District and the current volume traces early climbs, often with his regular partner J.W. Puttrell, with whom he later fell out, particularly over the controversy surrounding the first ascent of High Tor Gully.
