Published by Century Publishing, London, 1985, 1st UK Edition (First published by Sierra Club Books in the US in 1983), Insc, D/w, Fine. Galen Rowell (1940-2002) was an accomplished American mountaineer, wilderness photographer, author and adventure photojournalist, who was tragically killed, along with his wife, in a plane crash in California in 2002. Large format volume with the usual excellent colour photography from Rowell, one of the pre-eminent photographers of the outdoor world. This acclaimed volume is a result of Rowell’s extensive travels in China and Tibet soon after the borders were re-opened in 1980, following a thirty year period of being completely sealed off from foreign travel. This thorough documentation recreates journeys of past explorers which, combined with Rowell’s own expeditions, is divided into six parts – Mustagh Ata, Tian Shan, Inner Tibet, Chomolungma, Minya Konka and Anye Machin. There is also a useful Chronology of Mountain Exploration for the region and a bibliography. Illustrated in black-and-white and colour, with over 80 superb colour illustrations.
