Published by University of California Press, Berkeley/Los Angeles, 1990, 1st US Edition, D/w, Fine. Galen Rowell (1940-2002) was an accomplished American mountaineer, wilderness photographer, author and adventure photojournalist, who was tragically killed, along with his wife, in a plane crash in California in 2002. Large format volume with the usual excellent colour photography from Rowell, one of the pre-eminent photographers of the outdoor world. In this unusual collaboration between Rowell and the Dalai Lama, Rowell provides an Introduction and 108 superb colour illustrations of Tibet, a Tibet which the Dalai Lama had not seen since 1959, over 30 years earlier, when he was forced to flee to Dharamsala in India by the Chinese. The Dalai Lama provides a series of Essays covering his early life in Lhasa and his views on non-violence, peace and compassion, along with captions to the photographs. As this volume was being prepared in 1989, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
