Published by Gollancz, 1974, 1st English Edition, foxing edges, D/w, Nr. Fine. Memoirs of French climber Pierre Mazeaud who, with Walter Bonatti, were the sole survivors of the 1961 Central Pillar of Fresnay (Freney) disaster. Trapped by a storm on the south side of Mont Blanc, Mazeaud and Walter Bonatti were the only survivors from seven of the finest French and Italian climbers of their generation. Mazeaud also describes many alpine climbs, including the West Face of the Dru, the North-West Pillar of the Grands Charmoz, the Cassin Route on the Badile and the Direct on the North Face of the Cima Grande Ovest, as well as many other climbs and expeditions around the world. Later, in 1978, Mazeaud became the first Frenchman to climb Everest.
