Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson London, 2004, 1st Edition, D/w, Fine. In 1934 Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman, with 3 porters, succeeded in solving for the first time the problem of access to the Nanda Devi Sanctuary via the Rishi Gorge. Subsequently, in 1936, on a British-American Expedition, Tilman and Noel Odell made the first ascent of the mountain. Access to the Sanctuary has a chequered history as the Indian Government has tried to preserve its unique nature by restricting expeditions. In 2000, it was opened for one expedition led by Eric Shipton’s son John Shipton and the great Indian mountaineer Colonel Narinder Kumar (who led the expedition which made the second ascent of the mountain in 1964), with Hugh Thomson being offered a place on the trip. This book is the story of that expedition, along with some of the amazing stories from the history of the mountain and its exploration.
