Hillary led the first party to drive tractors to the South Pole – his party’s original role was to set up a supply depot for Fuchs’s team who were crossing Antarctica via the South Pole, but when Fuchs was delayed, Hillary’s team pressed on to the Pole, despite many dangers and hardships including crevasses and whiteouts.
