Description

Published by John Murray, London, 1936, 6th UK Edition (First published in 1871), numerous black-and-white illustrations, 5 foldout maps, No D/w, Fine.    Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was an English Mountaineer, Explorer, Illustrator, and Author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, at his eighth attempt, and the subsequent tragedy on the descent where four members of his party were killed. He made numerous Alpine first ascents in the 1860s and later went on to climb and explore in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies.   In this his first published work, he also produced one of the most important books in climbing literature, a classic work by one of mountaineering’s great pioneering figures and “The most famous of all mountaineering books” (Neate).  The book also offers a fascinating insight into the early history of climbing and climbing techniques.
