Description
Published by Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1953, 1st UK Edition, Insc, some foxing especially endpapers, D/w (chipped and small pieces missing), V.G. Probably the most widely read book on Tibet. Harrer, famous for the first ascent of the Eiger North Face in 1938, joined a 1939 Reconnaissance Expedition to Nanga Parbat, but was arrested in Karachi in Pakistan by the British once World War II broke out. In 1943 he made a third, and successful, attempt to escape from an internment camp at Dehra-Dun and made a hazardous winter journey over the Himalayas to Tibet with his companion Peter Aufschnaiter. Treated kindly by the Tibetans, Harrer became a tutor to the Dalai Lama. One of the best accounts of independent Tibet.
