Description
Published by Collins, London, 1980, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Nr. Fine. The fifth novel by acclaimed and award winning author James Salter (1925-2015) is thought to be loosely based on the life of climber Gary Hemming (1934-1969), the character Rand in the book, with the narrative taking place from California to the Alps, but principally on a new direct route on The Dru in Chamonix, a rescue from the same mountain, the subsequent divergent life of the two protagonists and the inevitable denouement. Very well written, classic climbing novel.
