A much more complex book than his award-winning Touching the Void, it examines themes of aggression and violence, in himself, in others, in societies, in nature, and their evil consequences in cruelty, warfare and genocide.  He describes several expeditions to the Himalayas and Andes, and makes keen observations on the situations in Peru, Tibet and elsewhere.  As always, very well written in Simpson’s vivid, anecdotal style.
