Published by Doubleday & Company, New York, 1968, 1st US Edition, D/w (one small nick), Nr. Fine. James Ramsey Ullman (1907-1971) was an American writer and mountaineer who has written a well regarded biography of John Harlin (1935-1966), an accomplished American climber, who died while attempting a ‘direttisima’ (the Eiger Direct) on the North Face of the Eiger. Harlin was the driving force behind the climb and, though he was killed when his rope broke, the climb was completed by Scottish mountaineer Dougal Haston, Harlin’s climbing partner, and a German party who were also on the face. The subsequent route was renamed the Harlin Route.
