Published by Methuen & Co, London, 1908, 1st Edition, spine a little faded and dent near front board, a few small marks to boards, V.G.   William Augustus Brevoort Coolidge (1850-1926) was an American historian, theologian and mountaineer.  Coolidge became one of the great figures of the so-called silver age of alpinism (1865-1882), making first ascents of the significant peaks in the Alps that had not been climbed during the golden age of alpinism (1854-1865).  On many of these climbs he was accompanied by his aunt, Meta Brevoort, and a pet dog Tschingel given to him by one of his guides, Christian Almer.  His first ascents include Piz Badile in 1867, Ailefroide in 1870, La Meije Central peak in 1870, Pic Coolidge in 1877 and the first winter ascent of the Jungfrau in 1874.  His further publications include Swiss Travel and Swiss Guidebooks (1889), The Central Alps of the Dauphiny (1892), Walks and Excursions in the Valley of Grindelwald (1900) and Alpine Studies (1912).  “His most readable book” (Neate).
