Description
Published by Thames and Hudson, London, 1961, 1st UK Edition (Original German Publication 1959), D/w (a number of significant tears, old sellotape marks and small pieces missing), D/w Poor, Book Nr. Fine. Wilfrid Noyce (1917-1962) was an English mountaineer and author who was a member of the successful 1953 British Everest Expedition that made the first ascent of the mountain. Though Noyce’s name is prominent on the D/w and title page, his contribution to the volume was writing the introductory essay and the notes to the 230 black-and-white photographs which form the bulk of the book. The descriptive essays which link the photographs were by Karl Lukan (1923-2014), who was an Austrian mountaineer, amateur archaeologist and author of over 50 books dealing with mountaineering and cultural-historical topics.
