Since the foundation of The Alpine Club in 1857, many members have carried sketch-books to the mountains and recorded both their endeavours and the mountains. Descriptions of these artists, together with many illustrations of their work, form the the principal part of this dictionary. 103 artists are profiled in the main text, with a further 11 in the addendum, ranging from Edward Whymper, John Ruskin and John Auldjo to William Heaton Cooper, Jim Curran and Andy Parkin.
