Published by George H Harrap, London, 1954, 1st UK Edition, D/w (some foxing inside, slight wear nicks edges), V.G. This 1951 Franco-Belgian Expedition made the first ascent of Pisco and claimed the first ascent of Alpamayo (5947m), chosen in a survey in 1966 as “the most beautiful mountain in the world”. However, with dark encroaching, they had in fact only reached the northern end of the summit ridge of Alpamayo and the true first ascent did not come until 1957. The expedition was unusual at the time in that there were two women climbing members, Claude Kogan and Nicole Leininger, who also climbed Quitaraju (6040m), Alpamayo’s near neighbour.
