Description
Published by John Murray, 1880, 1st Edition under this title (but actually the 3rd edition, abridged, of Whymper’s Scrambles Amongst The Alps in the Years 1860-69), corners bumped and a little worn, bright pictorial front board, hinges strengthened, slight foxing prelims, original spine relaid but cracked and worn, spine poor but a tight copy and internally V.G. A presentation copy “To W.L. Distant Esq with the kind regards of the author”.  Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was an English Mountaineer, Explorer, Illustrator, and Author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, at his eighth attempt, and the subsequent tragedy on the descent where four members of his party were killed. He made numerous Alpine first ascents in the 1860s and later went on to climb and explore in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies.  In this version of possibly “The most famous of all mountaineering books” (Neate), Whymper concentrates on the first ascent of the Matterhorn and its aftermath.
