Description

Published by Kaye & Ward, London, 1977, 1st UK Edition, Insc, D/w (slight fade mark on front cover), Fine.   This book describes two expeditions. Firstly, an attempt on Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain at 8,516 metres, where the expedition was defeated by storms and avalanches. And, secondly, Messner and Habeler’s ascent of Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak), at 8,080 metres the world’s 11th highest peak. This groundbreaking ascent was completed in true Alpine-style by the smallest ever successful team on an 8,000 metre peak, without oxygen, fixed ropes, porters and high camps, and on its most difficult face.
