Description

Published by Secker & Warburg, 1965, 1st Edition, D/w (a little frayed and worn at edges), light foxing, V.G.   Mountaineering historian Clark provides his summary and examination of the famous Matterhorn tragedy where, following the successful first ascent in 1865 by Edward Whymper’s party, four of the team were killed on the descent when Douglas Hadow slipped and pulled the others with him.  Those who died were Hadow, Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson and the guide Michel Croz, leaving Whymper and the Zermatt guides, Peter Taugwalder (father and son) to tell the story, which was very controversial at the time.  Clark used new evidence at the time which didn’t entirely agree with Whymper’s account in his famous Scrambles Amongst the Alps.
