Description

Published by Cassell & Company, London, 1974, 1st Edition, D/w (slight staining bottom edge), Insc, Nr. Fine.    Dougal Haston (1940-1977) was a Scottish mountaineer noted for his climbing exploits in Britain, the Alps and the Himalayas.  He is probably best known for being the first Briton, along with Doug Scott, to summit Everest in 1975.  He was also, with Don Whillans, the first to climb the South Face of Annapurna in 1970.  This volume starts with the first ascent of the Direct Route on the North Face of the Eiger in 1966 (also known as the Harlin Direct, after John Harlin who fell to his death on the route).  Haston was a prominent member of the summit team on this climb.  The book then brings the story of the Eiger North Face up to date, covering the North Pillar and the Japanese Route in summer and winter, as well as chapters on filming and rescue on the Eiger.  From 1967 he was the director of the International School of Mountaineering in Leysin, Switzerland, a role he held until his death in an avalanche while skiing above his home in Leysin in 1977.
