Michel Peissel (1937-2011) was a French ethnologist, fluent Tibetan speaker, explorer and author, who wrote around twenty books mostly on his Himalayan and Tibetan expeditions. His first Himalayan expedition was to study the Sherpas in Nepal in 1959, followed by one to Mustang in 1964 which resulted in the publication of Mustang: A Lost Tibetan Kingdom in 1967, which became an international best seller. The Great Himalayan Adventure provides an account of the adventures on his 1,200 mile journey by Hovercraft up nine different rivers from India to the borders of Tibet which he made with companion Michael Alexander in 1972.
