Description
Published by Footprint, Revelstoke BC, 1986, 1st Canadian Edition, D/w, Fine. The first professional guides employed in North America were all Italians who were in the retinue of Luigi Amadeo of Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, whose successful expedition to Mount Saint Elias in 1896 became an Alaskan and mountaineering legend. This led to Swiss guides being employed the following summer by Professor H.B. Dixon and in 1898 the Canadian Pacific Railway employed Swiss guides for their patron’s benefit in the Canadian Rockies. This is the history of those Swiss climbing guides; Kain, Feuz, Fuhrer, who created the first center of mountaineering in America and did many first ascents in the Canadian Rockies.
